Tiny flags waved in the breeze outside the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood Tuesday morning, Nov. 10, honoring some of the many Hollywood actors that have served the nation with military service, in recognition of Veterans Day.

“It is the first time in our (Chinese Theatre) 93-year history that we are honoring our actors that are also veterans,” said The TCL Chinese Theatre Operations Manager Levi Tinker after placing a flag on the hand and footprints of legendary actor John Wayne.
“There are 200 pounds of sand from the beach at Iwo Jima mixed into the concrete of Wayne’s star,” he continued. Wayne stared in the 1949 WWII drama “The Sands of Iwo Jima.”
A metal barrier kept people from getting a closer look at the flags that adorned hand and footprints outside the iconic Hollywood theatre because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Of the 333 actors that have their hand and footprints outside the theatre, 25 are military veterans. Two — Sean Connery, a veteran of the British Royal Navy, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who served in the Austrian Army — had flags from their respective countries marking their prints.
Some of the actors honored for their military service were Morgan Freeman, Stan Lee, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Mel Brooks, Kirk Douglas, Paul Newman, Clark Gable, and Rock Hudson.
Bob Hope’s and Betty Davis’ prints received flags to recognize their many years of service to the USO.
