CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A local group is making sure 2020 is sealed in history.

The mayor of Chesapeake and the CEO of ForKids gathered to seal a time capsule in the walls of the nonprofit’s future home in the South Norfolk section of the city.

Children enrolled in the education program contributed art to reflect who they hope to be in the future.

The time capsule will not be opened for another 50 years.

It included drawings from some of the children of what they think 2070 will look like and a brick from the South Norfolk Library that previously sat at the location before being moved to make room for ForKids’ new Center For Children and Families.

“We’re putting in mementos from our first building, Haven House Emergency Shelter in Ocean View. We are bringing in things from the community of South Norfolk and Chesapeake. We’re putting in masks, we’re putting in hand sanitizer and we’re putting in toilet paper. That may be hard for people to understand in 2070, but it sure has been important to us this year,” said ForKids CEO Thaler McCormick.

Children at the event also got a first look at the learning hub under construction.

The new facility will include five classrooms, a roof garden, tutoring rooms and a café.

The new center is expected to be complete in March 2021.
